By the age of 60, you ought to be smart enough to understand these things.

  1. Time means more than money. And money is very meaningful.
  2. The people who matter most are few, but they matter a lot.
  3. Nobody else gets a vote on how you earn, spend or invest your money. It doesn’t matter if they approve or disapprove. Unless they’re paying!
  4. The cavalry isn’t coming to save you from your past idiocy. Or your current idiocy. You have to figure it out for yourself.
  5. You matter – we all matter – but life isn’t all about you. It’s about the value you can bring to others.
  6. Be interested to be interesting.
  7. Don’t take it personally and you’ll avoid a boatload of problems.
  8. Pursue your ideal outcome and don’t settle. Instead, adjust your ideal outcome if you want. It’s your life. You can change your mind.
  9. When you speak, ask questions, then listen. (see #6)
  10. Distractions kill success. It’s important to start, but it’s more important to finish.
  11. Gratitude is always the path forward. Count your blessings on good days. Count them more feverishly on bad ones.
  12. Grumpiness only serves to make you a jerk. Avoid it by being kind.
  13. Behave so others are happy to see you and sad to part from you.
  14. Don’t take yourself too seriously. You’re not that important.
  15. Health is important. Don’t stop investing in yours.
  16. Wealth is spending less than you earn.
  17. Generosity is always a wise choice.
  18. Complaining is useless. Nobody cares. Nobody wants to spend any time around complainers. So it’s a great strategy if you want to be a reclusive hermit.
  19. Keep learning, growing and adapting. Resist any notion that you’re too old.
  20. Be quick to repent – to change your mind by refusing to go back. Instead, move forward toward improved behavior, habits and higher character.

As comedian Steve Martin said, “Be so good they can’t ignore you.”

Bonus: Keep chasing and catching your goals.
